Hello and Welcome!

Latest Awards - Family Distinctions
The Australian Professional Photography Awards added a Family Catergory this year. This is designed to for photographers to enter their everyday work into and not the place for majorly over photoshoped images. I entered this catergory as I believe it is central to what we do at Photobat, excellence in family photography.
I was right, there were only 11 silver distinction awards given out in this category and I managed to take out two of them. It’s always very rewarding to get awards, especially when they are images that have been commissioned by clients. One of the prints even got talked about on The Circle on channel 10, kinda lucky there.
Click here to read the my blog post detailing my entry process and why I enter awards and click here to check out all the winning entries in this category from some very talanted photographers.

CUP CAKE DAY AUGUST 16th AUGUST

We will be opening up the gallery door again and behind it will be cupcakes… heaps and heaps of cupcakes. You job is to come along and buy some so we can give all the money to the RSPCA to help the big and little animals.
10am – 7pm, Photobat Gallery in Holyman House, Launceston, everyone welcome. Stay tuned for more news of some of the exciting things that will be happening on the day and how you can get involved even if you don't live in Launceston.

Some Portrait Bits

Heaps more up on the blog, look out for the session that took things to a whole new level

Some Wedding Bits

Jarod and Liz came all the way from Sydney to elope at the Islington (well if you are going to elope, you should do it in style) Heather and Jay got married at a place out the back of nowhere at and old Hops Farm (and it was beautiful) and Claire and Andrew had some pre getting hitched shots at Egremont (fantastic "little" house) before taking over Windmill Hill Hall for the wedding in the city.

Some Tropical Bits

There was a slower pace of life amongst the Vanuatu people, things do get done but there isn’t a rush to do them. Quite a contrast to us back here. It was also a little infectious, back here if you had to wait 45 minutes for a fruit platter and you were the only person dining, you would complain. Over there you just sit back and relax and wait. We did find a heap of exciting things to do over there, and not things on the normal trail. We spent some times in Tongoa, the poorest area on Efate and also some time in Samma village school and town, a real village that wasn’t set up for tourists. There are already a few blog posts up and more will be coming in the next couple of weeks.

Getting Cheap Frames Bits

We have changed the way we do some things and have excess stock of our frames hanging about. So we are selling them at a great price. These frames go for about $25 in the shops but we are selling them at cost price of $16.50 each for the 8x12 frames and $22 for the 11 x 14 inch frames. Limited stock and colours available. Pick up only, give us a call 63348789 or email

That's about it... So here is a Puppy.

Remember to like our Facebook page!
Also to let us know if you want some frames (see above)

Hello and Welcome!

Wow. It’s been a while, the year started and just keeped picking up speed. So lets get straight down to it all happenings. It's a bit of a new look newsletter. Enjoy the photos.
Last weekend I took out 2010 AIPP Tasmanian Wedding Album of the Year (second year in a row)
Also was awarded 6 silver awards over the other four categories. See the images on the Batblog
In March I picked up three Accolades of Excellence at WPPI in LasVegas
Zakk has gone off to study at uni, but you can still see him assisting on some shoots.
My wife Vikashni has jumped on board in the Business Development Manager position, spear heading new computer systems and generally making heaps of things go awesome.
In saying that, we are doing some rejigging. New products and services on the way very very soon.
We are also cutting down the number of weddings we are shooting next year. The aim is to shoot no more than 20. Places are booking fast so if you know of some fun people who love great images and are looking to get married. Please let them to get in touch quick

Some Portrait Bits

Mothers Day is just around the corner... Mum's like photos. Just putting it out there. Give us a call on 6334 8789 or email photobat@photobat.net if you would like to have a portrait session or get a gift voucher.

Some Wedding Bits

  Some Highlights...
Killer Fords and binge drinking grandma’s were all part of Nyree and Craig’s spectacularly warm, fun and moving wedding.
Chris and Clare got married on Tropical South Stradbroke Island. That’s all the way up in Queensland! We saw a sugarglider hiding in the reception centre.
A spot of Helicoptering with Vivien as she arrived in style for her to get hitched to Michael down at Peppermint Bay
Cygnet is a great little place, but not as great as wandering around the hills shooting Emily and Craig’s wedding. Full Post
Running up and down the Tamar river with Jonny and Isobel’s wedding that had a whole heap of Scotland including the boys all kilted up.
Wandering around the farm with Louise and Hugh before all the guests descended onto one of the best laid out marques I’ve ever seen.
We spent some time lounging around in the long grass with Andrew and Nicola while enjoying tranquillity of the Bay of Fires.
Exploring some great coastline and making lots of people kiss at Andrew and Trish’s wedding down at the very beautiful Piermont.
Narrowly avoiding the storm at Tim and Ness’s wedding, but still having enough time to get out and get some ultra moody shots on the water front.
Batboothing it up with the best 90+ year old granddad I’ve met in ages at Adam and Ali’s Bacchus Marsh wedding (that’s over in Victoria for the geographically challenged) Full Batbooth post, Full Wedding post.
Playing with sooo many toys and logo in the Batbooth at Marcus and Natasha’s wedding while the groom and many of the guests rocked turned into the band Full Weeding Post, Full Batbooth Post

What else?

Are you a fan of the Photobat Facebook page? It’s updated heaps and has different images to the Batblog. It’s the best way to keep up to all the bits and pieces we are up to and you never know when there might be a competition. Click here to check it out and if you like, become a fan!

That's about it...

What do you think of the new layout? I make too many spelling mistakesand you guys love looking at photos, so why not reduce the words and make big the photos! All feedback will be appreciated. Just hit reply. Thanks for looking/reading to the bottom!

It’s being operated by Damon (formally of Luck’s) so if you enjoyed eating at Lucks, you can be pretty sure you are going to like eating at Cafe Rossilli. How to Win. Feature Product - Canvas Prints

Canvas prints have been one of our most popular products for the last 5 years. We use a very high quality acid free fine art canvas that has a 100 year archival rating. The canvas is bright white, meaning the image has fantastic color and definition. The inks that are used are genuine Epson Ultrachrome Inks that also help with the vibrant colour reproduction. All canvas prints come with a matt laminate which protects the print from dust, water, bumps and scratches. The prints themselves come stretched around a timber frame (real timber not cheap pine) which aids in them not warping or twisting. We can also customize the edging to any colour or just stretch the print around the frame. The latest addition is the Designer canvas Prints. We can now produce canvas prints to suit your spaces. They can be long, tall, thin and even square. This opens up heaps of new options for displaying your images.

When I was over in WA last month, I had the opportunity to spend a morning at Jorgensen Albums, the company who manufacture out albums, cd folios and other presentation items. Photobat has been a client for many years and this was the first opportunity I had to check out the factory and see where everything is made. I now know a heap more about what they can do and how well they do it. We also checked out a heap of their other products in their show room, some of which have Photobat images on and in them. We spied a heap of fantastic products, some of which are gradually being included in our product range.

Wedding-a-go-go!

I always say to myself not to book too many wedding this time of the year. Every year I fail to listen to myself. We still have 6 weddings (out of a possible 7 weekends) until the end of the year. Matt and Megan’s East Coast wedding was fantastic, I’m loving everything I’m shooting at the moment. This wedding and it’s BATBOOTH was a stunner. Don’t believe me? Go check it out for yourself at the Batblog.

Christmas Printing Deadline And New Year Closing

As usual this time of year very busy for us. If you would like prints for Christmas presents please remember placed the order by the 15th of December. We will still be doing orders after this time but can not be sure that they will be back in time for stuffing in stockings. We also recommend not stuffing prints in stockings unless they are quite big and do not require folding the prints, best to put it under the tree. For the first time in probably 8 years we are having a break! And by break I mean shooting a couple of weddings and that’s it. We will be out the door on the 23rd of December and returning back rearing to go on the 13th of January.

Photobat Newsletter

October 2009

Start Bit

The last moth has been all over the place. We have been getting ready for our busy season with many weddings and portraits all booked in. Plus I managed to do a couple of presentations to other photographers, one in Perth WA and another in Hobart. It’s always fantastic to be asked to share what we do and how we do it. In addition to my sharing, I also spent a bit of time meeting and talking to other photographers getting shareing ideas and tips on every aspect of photography.
I had the opportunity to spend a morning at Jorgensen Albums, the company who manufacture our albums, cd folios and other presentation items.

Feature Product – New Portrait Albums

One of the new products that have just been added to the gallery is our new range of portrait albums. I have been trying to find a great portrait album for a while and have finally come up with an absolutely fantastic and stylish album. The sample album has only been in the studio for a day and we have already had really great feedback on it. Features include Available in 3 sizes 5x7, 7x10 and 9 x 13 Each album is uniquely designed for each session 12 different cover colours White or Black base pages and matts Our old portrait folio albums are still available by request. Because we love the new albums, we are doing a special on them until the end of the year. If you purchase one of the albums, we will include an additional page for free. Valued up to $155. Please get in touch with us if you would like to check out the coolness of the new albums for yourself.

Van Wonderland Wrap Up

The Van Wonderland exhibition just concluded at the Design Centre in Launceston. Well over 100 people showed up for the opening and many more checked it out. It was so well received that the exhibition was extended by a week and is now set to tour around Tasmania. Look out for the exhibition appearing in Hobart and Devonport early in 2010. I’ll keep you informed of dates and locations when they are all firmed out. In the mean time, check out the some of the work and artists who were involved in the exhibition here.

RSPCA Mini Sessions

A couple of weeks ago we held a mini photography shoot to help raise some money for the RSPCA. 4 brave dogs and their owners came and visited us in the city and we fed them as many treats as required to get them to sit, play and jump for the camera. Only some drool was spilt. Each of the dogs is going to go into the Tasmanian RSPCA’s 2010 calendar. You too can have your pet featured on a date in the calendar. If we have photographed your pet this year and would like it included in the calendar, fill out the forms, let us know and we will supply the images to the RSPCA for you free of charge. Click here for the details and forms.

On the Batblog

Sometimes things turn out unexpectedly. Sam and Simon’s wedding was unexpected for all the guests at Simon’s birthday party. It kind of just happened, a celebrant appeared, everyone looked surprised and then there was an exchange of rings, little bit of a kiss then back to the party! Check it out and many other shoots on the Batblog.
Click here to see all the new posts and leave a comment to go into the draw (see sidebar)

End Bit

Stay Tuned to your inbox as I’ll be sending out another newsletter next week with some Christmas ideas. I’ll talk about what we can do for Christmas and also the looming shoot and print deadlines for delivery. Keep well till then!

The End Is Nigh

For all of October we have been running a competition to give somebody a limited edition print from our new fine art series. All you have to do is comment on a a batblog post, simple! There has been a heap of activity and there is still time to leave a comment on a post that you like. Van Wonderland Opening

Hi Everyone, As I write this we have the gallery layout completed, most pieces in place, catalouge being returned from the printers, photos ready to hang, and most importantly we have ordered the wine and nibbles. It's a fantastic collection of work from a diverse range of artists, so please come along and enjoy the opening of Van Wonderland. Friday the 18 September 6pm. (That's tomorrow night) Exhibition current till Sunday, 18 October 2009 at 2pm Location: Design Centre - Tasmania, Cnr Tamar and Brisbane Streets Launceston. Preview posts about some the artists have been posted over at Batblog Looking forward to seeing you all there if you can make it Alan Moyle Associate Curator and Photogapher of Van Wonderland

Van Wonderland is an exhibition of work by contemporary crafts practitioners exploring a mysterious world of not-quite-real objects and creatures, based upon historic western perceptions of Tasmania (‘Van Diemen’s Land’) as a distant and little-known island at the far reaches of the globe. This ‘new world’, full of strange and exotic flora and fauna, could be by turns beautiful and sinister – just as the strange Wonderland explored so famously by Lewis Carroll’s Alice. Step into Van Wonderland and explore the mysteries within. And don’t forget to take your teacup. Participating artists include Tara Badcock, The Purple Finch, Erin Tappe, Hideyo, Cat Badcock, Ghostpatrol, Megan Perkins, Omar Misa, Helen Goninon, and Anita Dineen with accompanying photography by Alan Moyle (Photobat). Come to the opening, Friday 18th September 2009 at 6 pm, Design Centre, Tamar Street, Launceston, RSVP by email or by 6331 5505. Exhibition open until the 18th of October.

Photobat Newsletter

August - September

Did you notice?

We missed August, not really, we were there but the newsletter managed to get slipped by without anyone noticing. But here it is a bit of a mixed newsletter filled with a heap of Photobat happenings from all around the place. In the latest news: Photobat was a finalist in the Launceston Cityprom Customer Service Awards for the second year in a row. We have donated $210 to the Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust from orders taken at a couple of charity balls over the last couple of months. The latest issue of Bride Tasmania is out with heaps of our photos through it as well as features on Matt and Molly’s wedding and also my win of the Tasmanian Wedding Photographer of the Year. Check it out in all newsagents Tas wide. The inside front cover is particularly good. We are photographing animals for the RSPCA's 2010 calander this week.

Cupcakes

It seems that people you guys like cupcakes! We sold just under $500 worth, and all proceeds went straight the RSPCA. Thank you to everyone who turned out for the open day, we had a fantastic time and are very glad you came along. New Limited Edition Fine Art Print Range

I have just released my latest collection of fine art prints. These prints are limited to an edition of 25 and are printed with pigment ink onto archival cotton rag paper. This is the first edition of prints I have released for quite a few years. The images printed are some of my favourites, including the award winning Urban Tree and Folengadros as well as three of my favourite Holga shots. New Exhibition Opening - Van Wonderland

For something a little different I’ve become associate curator of an exhibition of otherworldly craft. The exhibition will feature some amazing contemporary craft from 10 fantastic artists and is accompanied by portraits I have photographed over the last couple of months. Come to the opening, Friday 18th September 2009 at 6 pm, Design Centre, Tamar Street, Launceston, RSVP by email or by 6331 5505. Exhibition open until the 18th of October. The exhibition features works by Tara Badcock, The Purple Finch, Erin Tappe, Hideyo, Cat Badcock, Ghostpatrol, Megan Perkins, Omar Misa, Helen Goninon, and Anita Dineen. Over the next week I’ll be posting some other portraits that are not being featured in the exhibition. So make sure you check in with the Batblog to see all the fantastic work these artists create.

Speaking South and West

In the next month I have a couple of speaking gigs for photographers. The first is all the way over in Western Australia in late September. Click here to download the flier for all the information. It is a fantastic line up including David Oliver, Ric Syme and also Christian Fletcher. Come along if you are in the area The second talk is down in Hobart for the Festival of Photography run by the AIPP. It runs over two days from the 4-5th of October and also has Les Walkling and Sheldon Muller speaking. More info on the Batblog when the flier is released.

End Bit

That’s about
it for now; I’ll be sending a very brief newsletter to remind you about
the opening of the Van Wonderland exhibition in a couple of weeks. Hope
you are enjoying Spring!
